Dear Distinguished Professors, Colleagues, and Friends:

 

Thirty years have passed since many of us left Vietnam.  We escaped the suffering of a homeland ravaged by the destruction of war.  During the past three decades, we have faced many obstacles and yet, we have persevered and prevailed. Moreover, we have made tremendous progress.  Our children and grandchildren have also adapted very well and excelled in every field – many of them are now our colleagues in the health profession.  We are certainly very proud of the achievements that the next generation of Vietnamese living abroad has made. 

           

In parallel with the progress of other fields, the Vietnamese health profession has also grown tremendously.  Many of us have been able to demonstrate to the American, the French, the Australian, and other natives our perseverance and hard work through returning to training programs in order to continue our profession as pharmacists, dentists, or physicians.  The Vietnamese American Medical Association (VAMA) was established in 1989 to foster friendship and collegiality among physicians of Vietnamese heritage.  During the past 16 years, the VAMA has strived to be an organization for Vietnamese physicians of all generations who live and practice in the United States. 

 

To reflect upon the events that have shaped millions of Vietnamese living in the Free World, and to assess what we, as members of the health profession of medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy, have achieved during the past three decades, and on behalf of the Vietnamese American Medical Association and the Vietnamese Medical Society of Northeast America, we are honored to invite you to attend the 2005 VAMA National Convention for Physicians, Dentists, and Pharmacists. Strategically planned to have this year’s convention in the vicinity of the nation’s capital, this special event will take place from September 22 to 25, 2005 at the Marriott Fairview Park Hotel, Falls Church, Virginia.  In coordinating with the many Vietnamese people throughout the Free World who are commemorating thirty years of the fall of South Vietnam, the theme of our 2005 VAMA National Convention will be:

We are planning a unique meeting that will provide a wonderful opportunity to renew friendships, to share thoughts on the future of the Vietnamese community as a whole, and of the health profession specifically, and to enjoy the many cultural and social offerings of the Washington, D.C. area, such as the White House, the Capitol, and the Smithsonian institutions. The conference will also afford you the opportunity, through our continuing education program, to participate in lectures and workshops on the most recent medical, dental, and pharmacy advances, designed to serve the needs of an expanding Vietnamese-American population.  We make special effort to invite physicians, dentists, and pharmacists of Vietnamese heritage who are leaders in their fields to serve as speakers in order to showcase the accomplishments that we have made to the medical, dental, and pharmacy professions. 

 

We hope that you will honor us with your presence and that of your family.  We promise you an exciting, memorable, and enjoyable weekend, and look forward to hosting you in the capital of America.

Dear Fellow Colleagues:

 

The 2005 Vietnamese American Medical Association National Convention is coming up in Washington, D. C. from September 22 to 25.  I know that everyone is busy with work, family obligations, and more than your fare share of specialty association CME events and local medical meetings to attend.  What is with one more irrelevant event?  It is probably a reunion for your parents’ and grandparents’ contemporaries to reminisce about the old times in Saigon.  That was what I thought, and I could not be more wrong.  Similar to many of you, I graduated from medical school in America, and really do not know much about the Faculty of Medicine at Saigon, Hanoi, or Hue University.

 

Come and see for yourselves.  It is about meeting amazing people from all generations and all walks of life, sharing the camaraderie, learning from those who have walked before you, and helping those who are where you have been.  You will not only gain knowledge about some new medical topics and earn few CME credits, but will also learn about our Vietnamese literature, culture, political struggles, and problems facing our fellow Vietnamese Americans and people in Vietnam.  You will find others who share your goals, aspirations, passion, and together you will accomplish great things.  You will be able to listen to how creative others deal with difficult patients, chaotic schedules, impossible co-workers, Medicare rules, taking care of the demands of work and family, yet finding time to nourish and renew your spirits. 

 

I have also heard people jokingly cite that a perfectly good reason to attend the VAMA meeting is to find their soul mate.  After all, where else can you meet a lot of young, successful, single people!  And if you are married, it does not matter either, you can still come and gawk!  Just kidding.  No, it is a perfect opportunity to reaffirm your commitment to each other — look, honey, I’m glad I found you and not having to be out there anymore!

            If you have already committed to another event during the time of this Convention, please still sign up for membership in the VAMA (the membership form is included in this newsletter).  It is truly a great organization for young (and not so young) physicians of Vietnamese heritage.  You can then participate in the many programs that the VAMA sponsors, such as the Regional Hosting Program (to help students, residents, and fellows with local housing during their interviews for residency, fellowship, or employment), the Scholarship Program (to award outstanding Vietnamese American medical students who are in financial need), and the World Health Ambassador Program (to provide opportunities for physicians to perform medical mission in underdeveloped regions in America and throughout the world).  There are many opportunities awaiting you at the VAMA.  Therefore, please join us.

 

So, whatever your reason, register for the 2005 VAMA National Convention today to take advantage of the reduced fee for early registrants and for students, residents, or fellows.  Make it your Vietnamese American Medical Association.  I hope to see all of you, old friends and new friends alike there.

Đêm “Friday Reunion Night”, September 23, 2005

 

Trong Đêm Hội Ngộ thứ Sáu, 23 tháng 9, 2005 của Đại Hội, sẽ có chương tŕnh Văn Nghệ và Dạ Vũ từ 8:30 tối đến 12 đêm với ban nhạc The Red Sun, một ban nhạc lừng danh của miền Đông Bắc Hoa Kỳ.

 

Ban Tổ Chức thân mời các anh chị đóng góp vào chương tŕnh văn nghệ giúp vui để Đêm Hội Ngộ thêm phần hào hứng và thân mật (đơn ca, song ca, tam ca, hợp ca, v.v.). Về Giải Thưởng Giáo Sư Phạm Biểu Tâm

 

Giải Thưởng Phạm Biểu Tâm, dưới sự bảo trợ của Hội Đồng Quản Trị và Ban Chấp Hành Hội Y Sĩ Việt Nam Tại Hoa Kỳ (HYSVN-HK), được thiết lập từ tháng 4 năm 2000.

 

Giải Thưởng cao quư này được thiết lập để chúng ta cùng tưởng nhớ một vị đàn anh khả kính và một bậc thày suốt đời phục vụ tận tụy cho ngành Y Khoa Việt Nam, và sẽ được trao tại đại hội hàng năm của HYSVN-HK.

 

Giải Thưởng Phạm Biểu Tâm đă được trao lần đầu tiên tại Đại Hội của HYSVN-HK vào tháng 8/2001 tại New Jersey cho Giáo Sư Nguyễn Hữu (Brest, France). Giải Thưởng Phạm Biểu Tâm lần thứ hai được trao trong Đại Hội Orlando, Florida tháng 7/2003 cho cố Giáo Sư Đặng Văn Chiếu và cố Giáo Sư Đinh Văn Tùng. Giải Thưởng lần thứ ba sẽ được trao trong Đại Hội tháng 9/2005 tại Washington, DC.

 

Ban Tuyển Chọn giải thưởng gồm có: BS Nguyễn Ngọc Giệp (BSYK 1961), BS Trần Duy Tôn (BSYK 1962), BS Nguyễn Lê Hiếu (BSYK 1963), BS Phan Mỹ Dung (BSYK 1974), và BS Nguyễn Đông Quan (BSYK 1993).

 

Tiêu chuẩn chọn lựa được quy định như sau:

 

  1. Bác sĩ Y Khoa gốc Việt Nam, đang sống tại một quốc gia tự do trên thế giới và không có quá tŕnh hoạt động đi ngược lại đường lối của HYSVN-HK.
  2. Đạo đức và y nghiệp cao.
  3. Tận tụy giảng dậy và cống hiến nhiều hy sinh trong việc đào tạo các thế hệ Bác Sĩ Y Khoa Việt Nam.
  4. Có những thành tích nghiên cứu xuất sắc và rộng lớn về y học và khoa học.

 

Ban Tuyển Chọn rất mong được các đồng nghiệp đề cử những vị xứng đáng cho giải thưởng này. Để giúp cho việc cứu xét, Đơn Đề Cử cần có:

 

-         Tên và địa chỉ của người đề cử và của vị được đề cử.

-         Những chi tiết về người được đề cử như đă nêu lên trong mục tiêu chuẩn lựa chọn.

VỀ ĐẶC SAN 2005 CỦA HỘI Y SĨ VIỆT NAM TẠI HOA KỲ

Năm 2005, để đánh dấu 30 năm kể từ ngày chúng ta lần lượt rời bỏ đất nước đi t́m tự do, và đến nay đă tạo được nhiều thành quả tại khắp nơi, Hội Y Sĩ Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ dự định thực hiện một tập san với chủ đề “30 Năm Xa Xứ, Những Thành Tựu”. Tập san dự định phát hành vào tháng 9/2005, nhân dịp Đại Hội Thường Niên Hội Y Sĩ Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ.

 

Kính mời quí anh chị Y, Nha, Dược gửi bài về đóng góp cho tập san đặc biệt năm nay của Hội Y Sĩ Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ. Bài vở thuộc mọi thể loại: tin tức, thơ, văn, nhạc, kịch, bút kư, ảnh chụp, v.v., mọi đề tài: y khoa, văn hóa, nghệ thuật, nhân quyền, computer, v.v., và nếu có thể, xoay quanh chủ đề “30 Năm Xa Xứ, Những Thành Tựu”. Bài vở bằng Việt hay Anh ngữ (nếu là Việt ngữ, xin viết với các dạng chữ VNI, Unicode, hoặc VPS).

Nhân dịp này, Ban Báo Chí cũng xin thay mặt Hội Y Sĩ Việt Nam tại Hoa Kỳ, chân thành cảm tạ các anh chị năm trước, đă gửi bài vở về đóng góp cho Đặc San Thường Niên 2004 của Hội. Chính nhờ sự đóng góp quí báu của các anh chị, Đặc San Thường Niên 2004 đă có thể ra đời, phong phú và nghệ thuật.
